Hi, first visit to Andorra in 2 weeks time and a couple of queries I need help with. We are looking at hiring a van at Gerona airport (8 in party) and driving to Arinsal instead of coach transfer. We are used to driving abroad but would like to know what to expect and how long it is likely to take. Map source quotes about 3.5 hours? Are snow chains advisable? Any problems crossing the border?
Can you advise if Andorran sim cards are available on pay as you go locally.
Is it compulsory to wear helmets in snow board park?
Thanks in advance- Kim
3-3.5hrs should be about right. You'd be unlucky to need snowchains from Spanish side, more likely from the Toulouse/French side. Maybe nearer the actual resorts tho if there's a LOT of snow, but all the garages sell them. Technically you need to show passport in and out but in practice you'll probably be waved through (did get stopped by French customs on the way back out once).
Haven't driven, but have had 2 private transfers from Gerona. First guy drove like a lunatic and got there in 3 hours flat. Next transfer was more "measured" and took 20 minutes longer. Didn't see snow until we got withing 5 miles of Arinsal. Went via Vic and Manresa.
Last week in Arinsal, after it snowed Wed/Thu, I saw a car and a bus in a wall in the village, so you may need chains in the resort if it snows.
