Too Much Snow in Arinsal!
11th February 2009

It is rare for skiers to complain about having too much snow, but at the moment that is the situation here. Arinsal is currently cut off as the road here is closed. The whole of Andorra has imposed a 30km/h temporary speed limit, and snow chains are compulsory for any vehicle in the country. All the primary and secondary schools are shut and the Arinsal ski area closed at 2pm this afternoon due to the increasing avalanche risk. The risk is currently 5 out of 5 and predicted to stay that way until at least tomorrow night. Around a metre of snow has fallen so far over last night and today, and more is forecast.

Whilst this might not be great news for the people on holiday here this week, it is fantastic for anyone coming out next week. When the snow stops there will be a lot of fun to be had on the slopes which were already the best for a long time. Hopefully tomorrow we will get at least some chance to go and play in the white stuff. In the meantime - well there are snowball fights on every corner, the traffic police are shouting at people snowboarding down the road, sledges are selling like wildfire and the pubs enjoyed a busy afternoon after the slopes shut. In short everybody is making the most of the white stuff.

More and more Snow
8th February 2009

Here in Arinsal we are having an absolutely fantastic season. It keeps on snowing, all the runs are in good condition. The resort is already digging out the snow cannons - something they usually do in March if they decide that there is enough snow to last the rest of the season. Doing it now is a sign that they are confident we already have enough snow to last well into April whatever the weather decides to do. Vallnord are rumoured to be considering extending the season beyond the planned closing date in late April, possibly even opening into May. All in all, if you were considering a trip to Arinsal, this is one winter you don't want to miss out on.

Capa to Crest
30th January 2009

Following the recent snowfalls every single run in Pal and Arinsal is now open, including those few which open rarely most years. We have been able to ski from Alt de la Capa (pictured) right down to the Hotel Crest which is a vertical drop of around 1000m - the biggest vertical descent in Andorra. Off the pistes more possibilities keep opening up, and with more snow forecast things should just keep getting better.

Lots of Snow
27th January 2009

Over the last few days we have seen more snow here than I can remember falling in one go before. It started Saturday with the biggest storm in a decade over this part of Europe, then stopped just long enough to give a bluebird powder day Sunday before starting with a vengeance Sunday night and continuing until this (Tuesday) morning.

Although today was pretty windy, the snow was perfect to ski on with fresh lines to be had all over the lower part of the mountain and Les Marades opening for the first time since mid-December. We are expecting that tomorrow should be even better.

The Price of Beer
7th January 2009

When considering the changes the resort has seen this year - new lifts, changing bars, the best early season snow in several years - there is an important point that we have so far neglected to mention - the falling price of a pint. You may have seen Number One's recent item comparing the cost of Guiness across the town in his inimitable fashion, but it is also useful to note that the prices have dropped since last year in most establishments.

Last year a pint of ordinary lager would have set you back around four euros here in Arinsal. This year most bars are charging three, although obviously Guiness etc. will cost a bit more. A bottle of Estrella (the closest thing to a local brew) is down to two euros in several bars as well.

For comparison, I was paying six Euros in the French Alps a few weeks ago when I went for an autumn training course, so Arinsal really is good value this year.

All Lifts Open
28th December 2008

All the lifts in Arinsal and Pal are open, and all but one of the runs. This is actually pretty unusual before Christmas here (or in many ski resorts) as usually it takes time until there is sufficient snow on all the slopes. In particular, regular visitors will know that the Capa drag lift to the highest slope in Arinsal is often closed due to the windy aspect of the run down. This means there can be a shortage of snow on that face even when there is plenty of the white stuff in the rest of the resort. This year good early snowfall combined with good management of the slopes have kept the snow in good condition throughout the whole resort. So far this is shaping up to be the snowiest season for several years.

Arinsal Infocus Magazine
17th December 2008

New in Arinsal this year is the village magazine entitled Arinsal Infocus. Available from holiday reps, bars, restuarants and the Tourist Information offfice in La Massana, the magazine is full of useful local information about the village and ski area - much like this website but easier to carry around with you. The magazine is produced by local resident Terry, who has lived and worked in Arinsal for 12 years, so he knows what he is talking about. Make sure you pick up a copy when you arrive.

Spanish Bank Holiday Weekend
6th December 2008

This weekend is a long bank holiday weekend in Spain, and many Spaniards come to Andorra for the holiday making Andorra a very busy place right now.

This weekend in Arinsal most of the bars are now open, and some are open who haven't yet opened 'officially' with their opening party !!  That's something which may seem odd to you, but it's all quite normal to those of us who live here. Bars have opening parties at the start of the season, that's how it's done. Whether you've opened your doors already, or even been open all summer, the start of season bar opening party is part of the culture - compulsory for the bar and of course compulsory for all in the village to attend.

Abandon hope all ye who enter...

Early Opening
18th November 2008

As it says in the Newsflash the ski areas here are opening early due to early season snow. Vallnord have done a great job of managing the snow, grooming the slopes in October, making even more snow when cold conditions allowed and ensuring that the benefits of the early snow have been used to best advantage.

Visiting the Legalisation Office
10th November 2008

I visited the new legalisation office in Milton Keynes recently. If you're planning a visit yourself, a couple of hints would help you find it. That's because, being Milton Keynes it's slightly odd.

Whilst the address for the office ("Norfolk House") is Silbury Blvd, the building does not stand on this road, it is behind another building on Silbury Blvd called Ashton House.

If you travel to Milton Keynes by train as I did, then from the station to reach the Legalisation Office you would walk up Silbury Blvd on the left hand side. When you pass the Milton Keynes County Court on your left, you're nearly there, Ashton house is next. When you reach the centre of Ashton House there is a small blue sign saying 'Legalisation Office', but it is easly missed. Look for a walkway through the building, and follow it. Ahead is Norfolk House and following the walkway straight on will take you to the West entrance - which is the one you want. It took me about fifteen minutes to walk there from the station.

A very helpful man was on reception and he issued the queue number, then you go up to the 3rd floor and wait.

It's rather more pleasant then the old office, clean and more spacious. I overheard some people from London saying that the new office was less efficent and service slower. I'm afraid they are wrong, in my own experience with the old office sometimes your wait was 30 mins and sometimes it was 4 hours. It all depends on the day and how many people are there that day. On this day I had a two hour wait, which is about average I think.

Kev.
