Is it better to buy your ski kit at home or in Arinsal?

This is a question facing many of us and there are pros and cons to both. Over the years I have bought skis, boots and other kit in various resorts, as well as at shops and ski shows at home. I have been happy with most of it, and have probably bought more abroad than in the UK, but that has a lot to do with living in resort. If you are on holiday for a week the choice is perhaps a bit more difficult.

Below is a table giving the advantages of buying at home versus buying whilst on holiday to help you weigh up your options.

Advantages of buying at home

Advantages of buying in Andorra

The staff always speak good English so are easy to communicate with

You know that you have what you need before you go – leaving a vital purchase until you arrive may feel a little adventurous

You can shop when the sales are on, or pick up bargains at the ski shows

If something goes wrong during or after the holiday you can take the gear back to the shop – if you buy in resort this is difficult after the holiday

If you do have a problem it is much easier to argue your case – in resort you may just get a shrug

Shops are often larger, giving you a bigger range under one roof

The staff will all ski or snowboard most days, so will know what they are talking about (most speak English, some better than others)

Prices in Andorra tend to be around 30% lower for skis and boots

If you ski in March you can get great deals in the end of season sales

If there is a problem with the kit during the holiday you can get it sorted out there and then

You may be able to try before you buy, or get a refund of your ski hire costs when you make a purchase

If you buy boots in Arinsal, the fit can be fine tuned after a day or two of skiing

There are more ski shops close together, giving you a wider choice and the ability to shop around for the best deals

For a knowledgeable shopper, buying equipment in Arinsal, or most other ski resorts, is highly recommended due to lower prices and a wider choice. However, if you are newer to skiing you may prefer to visit a ski shop in your home country (and language).
